In a Moore League battle between Lakewood and Cabrillo both teams were searching for answers after a shaky first quarter. The Lancers found their rhythm in all three phases of the game as Lakewood defeated Cabrillo 55-7 Friday night.
“We started off pretty slow,” Lakewood QB Kade Casillas said. “We had to turn it around, we played to their level in the first quarter. In the second quarter we showed up and showed out.”
After winning the coin toss, Lakewood elected to receive and turned the ball over on the third play of the drive and the Jaguars recovered the fumble to take over less than a minute into the game.
Lakewood’s defense got the ball back as they forced a punt making things difficult for freshman quarterback Fernando Leanos.
On the next drive, Lakewood’s Charlie Wright three times for 35 yards including an 8-yard touchdown to give the Lancers a 7-0 lead.
Early in the second quarter, Cabrillo’s Aviann Ortega picked off a pass attempt to Caleb Tafua to get the Jaguars’ offense back on the field.
However, Lakewood’s defense came up with another big stop and the Lancers offense found the endzone as Casillas found Tagua for a 13-yard touchdown to go up 14-0 with 7:24 left in the first half.
Casillas wasn’t done there as he connected with JT DaCoud for a 60-yard touchdown to put Lakewood up 21-0.
Lakewood wasn’t done there as another turnover led to an 11-yard touchdown as Casillas found Cecil Xavier Smith to give the Lancers a 28-0 lead at halftime.
“I’m really proud of my guys,” Cabrillo coach Shane Gonzales said. “Lakewood’s a really tough team, by far the best team we’ve played this year so far and our kids stepped up to the challenge.”
Cabrillo got on the board late in the game after Leanos found Rodney Cheatum for a 12-yard touchdown.
On the ground Charlie Wright had two touchdowns and 150 yards for the Lancers. Casillas finished the game with 180 yards passing and two touchdown passes.
Cabrillo will be back in next week when they travel to take on Wilson and Lakewood will be on the road when they travel to take on Jordan.
