With the start of the tennis season coming up, we took a trip around Long Beach to check in with coaches and see the season outlook for their programs.
At Wilson, coach Nick Medina and the two-time defending Moore League champion Bruins will have two seniors on the team in co-captains Andrea Trolesi and Brooke Burke.
Medina is expecting big jumps from junior Vivian Hall who is expected to be Wilson’s No. 1 singles player.
The Bruins will also look to sophomore Vanessa Holden who made it to the Moore League final last season.
Along with Holden, sophomore Irit Paiement and freshman Penelope Hall are expected to contribute for the young Wilson squad as they go for a Moore League three-peat.
At Long Beach Poly, longtime assistant Mey Phy took over as head coach after the Jackrabbits captured the CIF Southern Section Divison 4 crown last season.
Poly is not letting their victory stop them from pushing for the same success as the Jackrabbits lost one senior and return the team that won the title.
“The girls have put a standard for themselves,” Phy said about how the team is keeping the same drive they had last season. “They put their own standard and the girls are following along with that.”
Poly will look to its senior class of Amy Pang, Angelina Ngoun, Hannah Tran in doubles and Lilia Williams and Janaiya Fuentes in singles.
In East Long Beach, Millikan and coach Torrie Frapwell are still figuring out where each player is best suited, but the Rams will look to the leadership of captains Vanessa Kuoch and Sofia Uy.
Millikan will look for big performances from Adora Vinhee, Memphis Nafarrate, Natalia Duenas, Riley Duenas and Nina Collier.
“We’re still working on some of the lineups,” Millikan coach Torrie Frapwell said. “Where people are going to fall, we’re filling some pretty big gaps. We only lost three seniors last year, but they were such key players.”
