Wilson’s Emi Sverduk has had a lot of time to think about last year’s Moore League girls individual championship.
After her loss on the final hole of last year’s tournament, Sverduk was dominant in the first two rounds of the 2021 tournament and sat comfortably with a seven-stroke lead heading into the final round at Recreation Park Golf Course.
Sverduk created enough cushion and extended her lead on the back nine on Thursday.
“I knew was playing against my best friend and I know she’s really good,” Sverduk said. “I was just thinking I just have to play my best and whatever happens, happens.”
Sverduk put the icing on the cake on the 17th hole when she chipped in a shot from 30 yards for an eagle to secure her second title in three years.
“I was already feeling really good about how I was doing,” Sverduk said before her shot on 17. “I was a lot of strokes ahead and making eagle was awesome. I haven’t made an eagle in awhile.”
Although they were competing, Alyson Sor had nothing but praise for Sverduk about the lead up to the tournament and her play.
“Earlier this week we were just talking with each other and keeping each other calm,” Sor said. “We were just trying to support each other through each day.”
Sverduk finished the tournament with a 71 for a 147 score overall and Sor shot a 72 for a 155 total.
Sverduk’s win was the ninth straight year Wilson has won the girls individual golf tournament.
“We’ve been blessed with a lot of good players that have come into our program and continued that tradition,” Wilson coach Jeff Evans said. “That tradition of excellence – they work hard.”
With the conclusion of the tournament, Sverduk and Sor secured two of the five automatic bids the Moore League will receive to the CIF girls individual tournament.
Joining them will be Millikan’s Emma Ashcraft and Olivia Hibson and Poly’s Kate Montemayor.
