This week both Long Beach State men’s and women’s golf teams competed for the first time in almost a year.
The LBSU men moved up two spots while shaving seven strokes off their game in the final round of the Nick Watney Invitational in Fresno today. The Beach finished fourth place with an 851 for 13-under par.
Wilson High alums Hunter Epson and Tyler Schafer led LBSU with rounds of 68 today. Epson (pictured) had three birdies and an eagle on the 12th hole to finish fourth individually.
The men return to action at the Prestige in La Quinta Calif., on Monday, Feb. 15. The three-day invitational will conclude on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
The LBSU women finished 10th overall at the Lamkin Invitational hosted by San Diego State. Senior Holland Shourds was the top finisher for the Beach and tied with UC Irvine’s Sienna Lyford as the top Big West finisher in the event.
“The results of this event aren’t as important as the ability to play and compete once more, it’s really what we’ve all been missing the most,” LBSU coach Joey Cerulle said. “We are grateful for the opportunity give to us by our administration. Now that we have assessed where we are, we can start planning on how to be better everyday. We look forward to turning the page and putting in the work that will end up defining us.”
The women will take a week off and then play host to The Gold Rush for the ninth time, returning to one of the team’s home golf courses at Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach. That invitational will be held on February 22 and 23.
