Despite school closures during the spring semester, the Long Beach Century Club was still able to honor the city’s middle school athletes and distribute All-City plaques to the winning schools. This year’s All-Sports Award winners, given to the best overall middle school sports programs in the city, were Hughes in Division I and co-champions Newcomb and Tincher in Division II.
It’s the fourth straight All-Sports award for Hughes, while Division II has had a different winner in each of the last four years. Hughes not only won the overall title in Division I, but had the best sports program in the city on both the girls’ and boys’ side in 2020. Tincher claimed the best boys’ sports program in Division II while Hamilton earned that distinction on the girls’ side. There was no competition in soccer this year, but otherwise all champions were crowned as in years past.
In girls’ basketball, Rogers won the All-City championship in Division I, breaking Hughes’ 10-year run of titles in that sport, while Lindsey won their second straight in Division II. Keller and Newcomb were the two champions for girls’ track, while Stanford and Lindbergh were winners in girls’ volleyball.
On the boys’ side, Bancroft claimed the Division I basketball title with Lindsey winning for the first time in Division II. In flag football, Rogers took the All-City championship in Division I with Lindbergh claiming its first title in Division II. Hughes and Tincher were the winners in boys’ track.
Finally, the Howard Lyon Sportsmanship Award was presented once again this year, marking the 30th time it’s been given to the schools who “have distinguished themselves in their sports and exhibit a high level of character and sportsmanship.” Keller was the winner in Division I this year while Hudson and Muir shared the Division II honor.
