Long Beach State Saturday Roundup

The Dirtbags split a Saturday doubleheader at No. 7 TCU (3-2) in its first road series. LBSU (2-4) came back for a 3-2 victory in game one, but were bested by the TCU offense in game two, 8-3. READ FULL REPORT

Reigning Big West Pitcher of the Week and Golden Spikes performer of the week Zak Baayoun pitched 7.1 strong innings in the first game. The sophomore allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts. Baayoun has 19 in two starts.

Softball

The 49ers (12-1) continued their record-setting start with an upset of No. 12 Auburn 6-3 in Palm Springs. REPORT

Sophomore Cielo Meza (7-0) delivered her fifth complete game while striking out eight. Nichole Fry, Jessica Flores and Grayce Majam all had two hits. Designated player Taylor Rowland had was the only player with two RBIs. LBSU scored four runs in the fifth inning to open up a five-run lead. The 49ers play No. 1 Washington and No. 19 California on Sunday.

Women’s Basketball

LBSU (6-22, 4-10) outlasted Hawaii, 85-80, in overtime at the Walter Pyramid to win its third consecutive game. REPORT

Freshman guard Shanaijah Davison led five double-figure scorers with 22 points. Senior guard Cecily Wilson had 17 points, six rebounds and two steals. Freshman Naomi Hunt had 16 points and five boards, while Emma Merriweather and Martina McCowan each chipped in 10 points. Merriweather had a team-high seven rebounds.

Men’s Basketball

LBSU (13-17, 7-7) led by two at halftime but couldn’t keep pace in the second half at Cal State Fullerton in an 81-71 loss. REPORT

Gabe Levin led LBSU with 18 points and four rebounds. The senior became the 12th player to score 1,000 points and grab 500 rebounds at LBSU.

Track & Field

Seven 49ers scored points at the MPSF Championships in Seattle. REPORT

The women’s 4×400-meter relay matched the school record in the event, set back in 2006.
