On Wednesday night, Long Beach’s fastest middle school boys took to the track at Wilson High School to compete with their teams one final time this season and crown the All City Champions in each division.
In the end, Stanford emerged victorious in Division 1 with 70 points, Newcomb edged out Cubberly by one point to win Division 2 68 to 67, and Lindbergh dominated Division 3 with 107 points. The meet included three field events and 7 running events, as well as an 8 x 100 meter carnival relay.
4 x 100 meter relay
Division I: Hughes held on for a close victory with a time of 49.44 after Stanford and Rogers both had huge fourth legs to close down on the Owls’ gap, coming in second and third with times of 49.80 and 49.84, respectively.
Division II: Washington crossed the line in first with a time of 48.76, finishing over a second ahead of runner-up Cubberley.
Division III: A huge second leg put Lindbergh in front of the field, and they never looked back, winning in 51.83 seconds over second place IVA, who finished in 54.15.
1600 meter run
Division I: Jesse Hinojosa Garcia put on a show in the 1600, running 4:59.17 to become the only athlete of the day to break 5 minutes, an impressive feat. His teammate Samuel Tapia finished close behind in 5:01.18. Both athletes doubled back later for the 800 meters.
Division II: Despite only being in the sixth grade, Hunter Perz of Newcomb dropped the hammer on the backstretch of the fourth lap to surge to the lead and win in 5:23.36. He would double back later in the meet for the 800, where he finished fourth.
Division III: In what proved to be a thrilling final lap, Lindsey’s Anthony Ameida won the DIII mile with a monster kick down the homestretch to barely overtake IVA’s William Vucurevich, winning in 5:36.18.
400 Meter Dash
Division I: Elisia Tolo of Hoover found another gear on the homestretch to take the win in 56.87 over Marshall’s Blake Reed.
Division II: Washington’s Caleb Bullock was the only athlete to run under 60 seconds in DII, holding on to secure the win in a time of 59.51 seconds.
Division III: Kaimana Urdinarrain of IVA finished with nearly a three second margin over the field, crossing the line in 1:03.18. Urdinarrain had already finished third in the DIII long jump.
100 Meter Dash
Division I: Caeson Miller of Stanford blazed to victory, becoming the only runner in all three divisions to break 12 with a finishing time of 11.76 seconds.
Division II: Washington’s Nathan Zavala was so close to the 12 second barrier, finishing in 12.03 ahead of Gabriel Lizarraga of Nelson’s 12.30.
Division III: Lindbergh’s LeeBoise Word and Kyle Daly went 1-2 in 12.59 and 13.09, respectively, scoring some big points for the Eagles to help their team to victory.
800 Meter Run
Division I: The Marshall Rams again delivered a 1-2 punch, as their two star distance athletes Jesse Hinojosa-Garcia and Samuel Tapia finished in first and second in a close race. Hinojosa-Garcia emerged victorious in 2:18.04 over Tapia’s 2:18.44, completing the grueling distance double crown.
Division II: Newcomb secured their sweep of the distance events, as Nicholas Theslof won in 2:26.13, just ahead of Nelson’s Nathan Pearl, who ran 2:27.55.
Division III: The DIII 800 played out very similarly to the 1600, as Lindsey’s Anthony Ameida again emerged victorious over IVA’s William Vucuverich by less than a second, posting a time of 2:36.34.
200 Meter Dash
Division I: AJ Canseco of Rogers was the only athlete of the night to run under 25 seconds, winning in 24.63 over Princeton Pierre of Hoover’s solid run of 25.22.
Division II: Cubberley’s Luca Dickstein surged to the lead early and powered home, crossing the line in 25.69, half a second ahead of Washington’s Caleb Bullock.
Division III: IVA’s Kaimana Urdinarrain snagged his second championship of the night with a time of 26.46, just ahead of Kyle Daly, whose 26.63 was good enough to secure him his third runner-up finish of the meet.
4 x 400 Meter Relay
Division I: Rogers ran a strong race and had a massive third leg to surge into the lead, but they were passed by Marshall in the final lap, who ended up crossing the line in first. However, the Rams were disqualified, and the Mustangs, who had hung on for second, became the DI 4×4 champs.
Division II: After a strong first leg, an insane second leg gave Stephens a 50 meter gap over the rest of the field that only grew, as they dominated the race with a time of 4:11.43.
Division III: IVA had a very impressive performance, leading all four laps and crossing the line in 4:32.21, five seconds ahead of second place Robinson.
Shot Put
Division I: Ekzekiel Holland of Marshall became the Division I shot put champion with a huge throw of 40 feet, 9 inches to edge out Rogers’s Elijah Day, who threw 39 feet, 11 inches, good for second place.
Division II: Makai Trueblood dominated the Division II shot put, winning by over four feet with a monster 40 feet, 10.5 inches.
Division III: Gustavo Leon of Lindsey threw 34 feet, 6.5 inches to secure the DIII shot put crown, over two Lindburgh athletes, Abraham Amaro and Jacob Rodriguez who threw 33 feet, 5.5 inches and 33 feet, 1.5 inches, respectively.
Long Jump
Division I: Nathan Duong of Stanford soared in the long jump, landing a mark of 18 feet, 5.5 inches. Duong was the only athlete to jump over 17 feet.
Division II: Austin William of Newcomb jumped 14 feet, 4.5 inches to win by half a foot over Cubberley’s Ben Moreno.
Division III: Lindbergh’s LeeBoise Word jumped an impressive 16 feet, 7 inches to win his second DIII title of the night over teammate Erick Escalla, who went 15 feet, 11 inches.
High Jump
Division I: Stanford’s Nathan Venegas cleared 5 feet, 4 inches in the DI high jump to emerge victorious over 3 athletes tied at 5 feet: fellow hawk Jorden Rodriguez, Rogers’s Alex Gerros, and Hughes’s Nathan Woo.
Division II: Carlos Ruiz of Franklin jumped 5 feet, 2 inches, good enough to put him ahead of Stephens’s Jeremiah Owen, who cleared 5 feet flat.
Division III: IVA’s Alexzander Branda-Ran delivered the most impressive high jump performance of the evening, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches to win over Lindbergh’s Kyle Daly at 5 feet, 2 inches.
