After receiving a first-round bye, the Moore League champion Millikan boys’ lacrosse team took on El Segundo on Friday night in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.
The visiting Eagles kept the pressure on Millikan throughout as they defeated the host Rams, 7-1.
“Our boys played real hard,” Millikan coach Jared Weckerly said. “Sometimes the coin just doesn’t flip your way. It is what it is.”
The Rams defense came out strong in the first quarter bending but not breaking as El Segundo put pressure on Millikan in the counter and used their speed to try and keep the Rams off balance.
Cole Hajt scored the first goal of the game on a skip shot to give El Segundo a 1-0 lead after the first quarter.
Justin Linares was great in the goal for the Rams keeping El Segundo’s offense off the board to give his team a chance in the first half.
The Eagles started to gain momentum before the half scoring two more goals to take a 3-0 lead at halftime.
“They did the exact thew thing that we thought they were going to do,” Weckerly said.
After half Millikan defense continued to stay strong as Linares continued his strong afternoon and finished the day with nine saves.
But, the Eagles along with goalkeeper Jack MacCaulley – who had 11 saves – broke the game open and took a 5-0 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Millikan got on the board in the fourth thanks to a goal from Elias Abea. However, the Eagles once against responded scoring two more goals to put the game away.
The Moore League lacrosse season came to an end Friday as Compton suffered a 14-3 loss at University High in their second-round D3 contest.
