The Los Angeles 2028 Olympics will have an even more decidedly Long Beach flavor, it was announced on Tuesday. Long Beach is adding beach volleyball (originally set to be hosted in Santa Monica), target shooting, coastal rowing, and sport climbing to its already-strong roster of Olympic events. That brings the city’s total to 11 Olympic events to be hosted in 2028, more than the 1932 and 1984 Olympic events hosted in the city combined.
“Long Beach is now confirmed to serve as a premier waterfront venue for the 2028 Games,” said Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson in a press release. “We are excited to open our doors to the world and showcase the culture, diversity, and spirit of our community.”
The moves were announced as part of the final approval of the LA28 Olympic Venue Plan on Tuesday, which included the revelation that Dodger Stadium will host Olympic baseball’s return.
Long Beach was originally slated to host five sports as part of the LA28 pitch, and has now seen that roster more than double over a pair of expansions. Long Beach will host the most sports of any city outside the City of Los Angeles.
Long Beach’s 2028 Olympic sports will be:
-Beach Volleyball at Alamitos Beach
-Coastal Rowing, waterfront
-Sport Climbing, Convention Center Parking Lot
-Target Shooting, Convention Center
-Handball, Long Beach Arena
-Rowing and Canoe-Sprint, Marine Stadium
-Sailing, Belmont Pier
-Marathon Swimming, waterfront
-Water Polo and Artistic Swimming, Convention Center Parking Lot
The city had been slated to host the triathlon competition as well, with USA Triathlon establishing a multi-year Triathlon Legacy event along the waterfront–but in Tuesday’s announcement that event was moved to Venice Beach. The move was somewhat ironic since Long Beach’s waterfront was famously misidentified as Venice Beach during the 2024 Olympics’ closing ceremony broadcast.
The LA28 Committee said they’d have more information on the Paralympic venues in the coming months. The 2028 Olympics will be held July 14-30, 2028 with the Paralympics taking place August 15-27, 2028.For more information about Long Beach’s involvement, visit longbeach.gov/2028Games.
