It was a complete team effort and near perfect performance from Millikan in a 6-0 victory over Long Beach Poly on Thursday afternoon at Joe Rodgers Stadium.
The Rams scored twice in the first inning and were in complete control for the rest of the game with senior Lauren Cantwell in the circle. She pitched a complete game two-hit shutout while striking out 12 batters.
“Especially coming out of the Lakewood game, I didn’t really know what I was expecting, but once I’ve got into the groove of it it feels more relaxed,” Cantwell said.
“This is Lauren’s year,” Millikan coach Michelle Lehr said. “I just really want this to be the best year for her.”
Millikan (8-5, 4-0) has won the last four Moore League softball championships and certainly played like the reigning champions against the upstart Jackrabbits.
Millikan junior Riley McAndrew had two RBI triples and two runs scored. Senior Morgan Zimmerman had a single, a double and three RBI. Junior Addy Everrett had two hits and two runs while senior Ella Burleson had a game-high three RBI.
“The (Millikan coaches) preach staying simple in the box, staying short and putting your hands through the ball,” McAndrew said.
On Tuesday, Wilson hosts Millikan while Poly visits Jordan.
