Long Beach City College Notebook: Softball On Another Winning Streak, New Energy For Swimming Teams

Long Beach City College softball had its 12-game winning streak snapped last Friday with a 3-0 loss to No. 5 El Camino. The No. 7 Vikings are now 22-3 overall and 15-2 in South Coast Conference play.

“A 12-game winning streak is fun, now it’s time to start a new one,” said LBCC coach Megan Martinez. “It’s exciting to compete in our competitive conference. Our team is hungry and excited for the next round (of league play).”

LBCC’s Hailey Harris pitched a complete game while scattering seven hits and three earned runs. El Camino struck early with a home run, and added insurance runs in the seventh inning.

On Tuesday, LBCC got back to winning ways with an 11-1 victory at East Los Angeles. Third baseman Michelle Cervantes had a hit, two RBI and three runs scored while pitcher Adalise Valenzuela scattered three hits and two walks over a complete game performance.

The Vikings host Orange Coast on Saturday at 1 p.m.

BASEBALL

LBCC (14-11, 8-4) dropped two games vs. Santa Ana last week and look to bounce back with three games against Compton this week. The Vikings host Compton on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Sophomore Danny Rodriguez leads LBCC with 42 hits and sophomore Ryan Lopetegui has a team-high six home runs. Sophomore ace Myles Dismute leads the staff with a 1.79 ERA and 46 strikeouts across 50.1 innings.

SWIMMING

The LBCC swimming teams grabbed wins over Pasadena City College and Cerritos College in a home conference meet last Friday. The women beat Pasadena 223-25 and Cerritos 197-69. The men defeated Pasadena 174-92 and Cerritos 187-83. 

Mar Bernal led the women’s team with victories in the 100 freestyle (57.93), 200 freestyle (2:02.72) and the 500 freestyle (5:34.13) where she posted a personal best. She was also the backstroke leg in the 200 medley relay victory. Nina Gonzalez won the 1000 freestyle (12:16.59) and 200 breaststroke (2:42.41), while Avery White was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.24) and 200 IM (2:20.27).

Nathaniel D’Aloisio led the charge for the men by winning the 100 backstroke (55.95) and 200 breaststroke (2:11.44). He was also part of the 400 freestyle relay win (47.63 split). Elijah Molina won the 200 butterfly (2:27.51) and 200 IM (2:14.78), while Sandro Pueyo took the 200 freestyle (1:56.20) and was on the 400 free relay (49.83 split).

“The team really stepped up today and delivered some incredible performances across the board,” said LBCC Director of Aquatics Bradley Adamson. “We had standout wins… Our relay teams also shined, and we saw plenty of personal bests and strong efforts across the board. This meet was a solid step forward as we continue to build momentum for the rest of the season.”

The Vikings host Mt. San Antonio College on Friday at 10 a.m.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Vikings (11-5, 7-1) are on a seven-game winning streak after beating Moorpark 25-17, 14-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-12 in a thrilling five-set match in Long Beach. 

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

LBCC (9-7, 3-1) is home on Friday at 10 a.m. for back-to-back games against Desert and Mt. San Antonio.
