There is a moment in every season when expectations meet reality. Great teams get it out of the way early. Good teams get it from lessons in losses. Bad teams never get there.
It’s still unclear what the Long Beach State Dirtbags are this season, but that moment was this weekend when they were swept hardly by Cal Poly on Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
The Dirtbags (6-13, 1-5) have lost six straight games since opening Big West Conference play with an upset at ranked UC Irvine.
“There’s some things we’re not capable of doing just yet and we have to revamp,” Dirtbags coach TJ Bruce said. “We knew it was a redo. I thought we would be further along at this point.”
Shortstop Armando Briseno was the only Dirtbag with two hits as the Mustangs had 12 hits and eight extra base hits. Cal Poly (13-6, 6-0) hit three home runs and one in each of its wins on the weekend.
The theme of LBSU stranding runners continued with nine reaching base without scoring.
LBSU hosts LMU on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
