The Cabrillo girls’ soccer team had their historic postseason ended in the CIF Southern Section Division 6  quarterfinals as Segerstom took down the Jaguars 1-0.

Sergerstom didn’t want to waste any time in this game, as they scored the first and only goal in the fourth minute of the first half. The goal came from captain Alexis Chavez with a header off a corner kick. The Segerstroms offense was off the hook as Cabrillo was continuously trying to stop them from getting to goal.

Even with only one goal made all of the other attempts throughout the game were blocked by the one and only Stephanie Salgado!. The Cabrillo goalkeeper finished the game off with 10 saves  in the goal.

“We talked about ahead of time that [they] have a tricky little run. It causes us to have to adjust a bit and we didn’t, it’s the difference of the game” said Cabrillo’s head coach Adriana Santillian, explaining what could’ve been done differently.

Cabrillo won its fist ever postseason game with a penalty kick shootout in the first round.

As seen in the last few minutes of the second half, when Cabrillo had the ball it was hard to move around. Every corner throw they had, the ball would move ever so slightly, until the overcrowding became too overbearing

Coach Santillan said of working with the team during the Moore league season “It’s hard to come out of the survival mode. Man can this team pass and have ball control, but getting them to do that in the last few games has been difficult. [since] they’re so used to surviving and getting the ball out of the area.”

Even with this heartbreaking loss, the legacy this team gave the Cabrillo soccer program will live on. The first time in Cabrillo history did their girls soccer program make it to not only CIF playoffs, but all the way to quarterfinals.

“They have created a legacy because now future jags, 7th and 8th graders, who were looking at Millikan or Poly… hopefully look at us and our success this season,” she said.

“It’s going to be an entire re-building for next year,” she added about losing nine seniors, eight of which never come off the field.

The Jaguars retuning are ready to come back and get their team back to the postseason.
