Cailey Christen, Long Beach Poly Water Polo
Cailey Christen helped lead a team effort that put Long Beach Poly into this week’s CIF-SS semifinals. She had the first goal of the game against St. Joseph and also tied it up late in the game before Poly surged ahead.
Jovani Ruff, Long Beach Poly Basketball
Jovani Ruff made Long Beach history last week, scoring 22 points in a playoff win and 24 points in a narrow playoff defeat at Los Al. Those performances brought him to 2,063 career points, 14 more than previous record holder Roschon Prince, making him the new career point total in Poly and Long Beach high school history.
Mason Johnson, Cabrillo Basketball
Senior Mason Johnson had 21 points and some thunderous dunks tonight in Cabrillo’s playoff victory in the first round, and scored 12 points in the second round win to tie for the team high.
Makayla Quesada, Long Beach Poly Soccer
Long Beach Poly’s Makayla Quesada scored a brace in the Poly’s CIF-opening win, a 2-0 victory, and also had the game-winning goal in a come-from-behind 2-1 victory on the road.
Maralyn Marquez, Cabrillo Soccer
Cabrillo center back Maralyn Marquez helped lead a Jaguars shutout in the second round of the playoffs and also scored the last goal of a PK shootout to put them into this week’s quarterfinals.
Casey Pettyjohn, Wilson Soccer
Wilson junior Casey Pettyjohn scored a hat trick for the Bruins in their blowout second-round win at home, which put them into this week’s quarterfinals at Dominguez.
Roberto Bermudez, Long Beach Poly Soccer
Senior Roberto Bermudez was an absolute menace for the Jackrabbits last week in their second-round win. He had six shots, drew a PK, and buried the game winner from the spot to give his team their second 1-0 win of the playoffs.
COLLEGE
Jack Cantlay, Long Beach State Golf
Junior Jack Cantlay shot an eight-under par 203 at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Kauai, finishing with three rounds of 68 or better to record his third Top 5 finish of his career with Long Beach State, placing fourth overall in a 102 golfer field that included 19 nationally ranked golfers.
