Long Beach Poly boys’ soccer took a road trip and braved the elements to upset Romona 1-0 in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs.
Poly’s Roberto Bermudez scored the game’s only goal in the first minute before goalkeeper Noel Gutierrez and his defense locked down the top seed in the bracket with a clean sheet performance.
“The game tonight was brutal,” Poly coach Carlos Casillas said. “Due to the rain we weren’t able to play like we wanted. We just dumped balls forwards looking for a mistake from their defense. Overall I couldn’t have asked for a better time than for our goalkeeper and defense to step it up and give us a shutout to start our playoff run.”
Poly (9-7-6) will face the winner of Culver City and University in the second round on Saturday.
