Jacob Castillo, Cabrillo Wrestling

Cabrillo’s Jacob Castillo made history at last weekend’s Moore League Finals, becoming the first Jaguar ever to win an individual league title as he claimed the 120 lb crown.

Nathan Itchon, Long Beach Poly Wrestling

Nathan Itchon made history as well at the Moore League Finals, claiming his fourth Moore League crown in the 126 lb. Itchon becomes just the fourth grappler in league history to four-peat and first in Poly history.

Sequoia Newman, Long Beach Poly Water Polo

Long Beach Poly’s Sequoia Newman piled on four goals in the Jackrabbits’ win against Muir on Friday in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs, advancing Poly to this week’s quarterfinals.

Savannah Tucker, Long Beach State Basketball

Savannah Tucker earned her second Big West Player of the Week award this season after a huge win over CSUN last week, in which she dropped a career-high 33 points. Tucker is averaging 17.2 points per game this year.

Moni Nikolov, Long Beach State Volleyball

In front of a sold-out Walter Pyramid, Moni Nikolov put on an all-around showcase, making seven aces and leading No. 1 Long Beach State in points while making 35 assists as the Beach defeated No. 3 UCLA 3-1; Nikolov was named Big West Player of the Week.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
