Division 2

The new format of ranking teams by computer to create playoff divisions can create a number of interesting scenarios, and Millikan and Wilson are the perfect examples. The pair finished in second and third place in the Moore League behind Long Beach Poly, but both will endeavor playoff runs a division ahead of the Jackrabbits in Division 2.

Millikan (12-5-3, 10-2) finished in second place in the Moore League, but the Rams’ are no stranger to being atop of the ranks in Long Beach. The Rams’ were in the Open Division last year and Division 1 the year before, so a Division 2 placement is a relief if you’re comparing recent years.

This year, the Rams’ have a younger and less experienced roster, though, and their new journey in Division 2 will start at home when they host Mission Viejo (10-1-4) on Wednesday.

In the same situation, Wilson’s third place finish in the Moore League was no indication of their playoff ranking. The Bruins (12-4-2, 9-2-1) finished third in the league and 25 spots behind Millikan at No. 71 in the CIF-SS playoff rankings.

Wilson will head on the road for its playoff opener at Thousand Oaks (8-7-3) on Wednesday.

Division 3

Long Beach Poly (10-3-1, 10-1-1) is a clear beneficiary of the playoff formatting after “over-performing” in comparison to the ranks of their Moore League opponents. The Jackrabbits had a key draw with Wilson at the beginning of the season and won their Moore League championship bout against Millikan last week.

Despite those wins, the Jackrabbits are a division back from both Millikan and Wilson and sit as the No. 3 seed in Division 3. Poly will start its playoffs at home on Wednesday as they host a tough opponent in Golden West League champs Fullerton (17-5-3).

Division 6

Another pair of Long Beach teams share a bracket here in Division 6 where both Cabrillo and St. Anthony will open the playoffs.

Cabrillo (10-7-3, 5-7) finished fourth place in the Moore League to secure the final guaranteed playoff spot. The Jags’ found a crucial win against Lakewood at the end of their season and took care of two matchups against Jordan to clinch their spot.

The Jags will get a home game on Wednesday and are set to host Arrowhead Christian (4-5-2).

St. Anthony (9-5-1, 6-4) finished second in the Camino Real League and will head on the road in their playoff opener. The Saints will head north to Whittier Christian (10-5-3) on Wednesday.
