HIGH SCHOOL

Jonathan Weston, Long Beach Poly Football

Jonathan Weston from Long Beach Poly started the game with an interception and ended it with an interception, helping the South All-Stars to victory in the return of the 605 All-Star Game last weekend.

Lincoln Dean, Cabrillo Basketball

Lincoln Dean led Cabrillo with 22 points on 7/13 shooting in a big, dominant win over Millikan last week, helping the Jaguars to secure a second straight playoff berth.

Ivan Cervantes Vega, Millikan Soccer

Millikan’s Ivan Cervantes Vega filled in at a different position and still scored a goal in the win over Poly last week which clinched a third straight Moore League title for the Rams.

Dalila Preciado, Long Beach Poly Wrestling

Poly dominated the Moore League girls’ wrestling finals last weekend with eight league titles; Dalila Preciado pinned for a win to grab her third straight league title.

Andra Greer/Aaya McLyn, Long Beach Poly Soccer

Andra Greer and Aaya McLyn were the goal scorers in Poly’s 2-0 win over Millikan, which gave the Jackrabbits their first league title in nine years.

Mikey Cortez, St. Anthony Basketball

Senior Mikey Cortez came up big for senior night as he scored 17 points to help St. Anthony in a big win over St. Paul, pushing their win streak to eight and setting up a league title chance this week.

Jovani Ruff, Long Beach Poly Basketball

Jovani Ruff dropped 51 points against Compton last week to set the school record for most points in a game. Ruff was so efficient he came out of the game with three minutes left in the third and still set the record.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
