For the first time in five years, the St. Anthony boys’ basketball team are Del Ray League Champions. The Saints secured their first place spot with a 66-55 win over St. Monica on Monday night to wrap up their regular season schedule.
St. Anthony (18-6, 10-2) received a team-high 25 points from Donovan Pitts and 13 from Aman Haynes. Darius Williams and Jayshawn Kibble both chipped in eight.
“Grateful for my staff that surrounds me, extremely grateful & proud of our boys!” St. Anthony coach Alan Mitchell took to social media after the win. “They accepted every challenge! Got closer, got better, got hungrier.”
The Saints opened the season with a 1-2 start after a pair of tough losses to St. Pius and St. Bernard. St. Anthony proceeded to finish the season with nine straight regular season wins while going 6-0 on the road to close out league play.
St. Anthony will carry its momentum into the post-season next week as they look to mimic their historic playoff run from just a season ago. Last year, the Saints won all five of their CIF-SS playoff games en route to becoming Division 2AA Champions.
The CIF-SS boys’ basketball brackets will be released this Saturday.
