Tragedy struck the Long Beach sports community on Friday, as a Cabrillo soccer player passed away following an on-field medical emergency during a frosh-soph game at home against Long Beach Poly.
An email sent to Cabrillo families and staff this evening confirmed the horrible news, and the school’s sporting events for the rest of the day were canceled.
“It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of one of our 9th-grade students following a medical emergency during tonight’s soccer game,” reads the email. “School staff, LBUSD School Safety, and paramedics responded immediately to provide assistance, and the student was transported to the hospital. Regrettably, despite all efforts, the student passed away at the hospital.
“As the student’s family processes this unimaginable loss, we ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time. Our hearts are with them, as well as with our students, staff, and all who are affected by this tragedy…
“We are heartbroken by this loss and stand together as a school community in support of one another. Our thoughts are with the student’s family and the entire Cabrillo community.”
LBUSD spokesperson Elvia Cano confirmed the news, and said that when school resumes on Tuesday, counseling services will be made available for students and staff in need of support.
The Cabrillo boys’ soccer Instagram page said that the team is holding a vigil at 9am Saturday morning, with flowers and candles. They’re going to meet at the Cabrillo roundabout at 9am and then walk over to the field. Soccer alums are encouraged to wear their jerseys.
“As a team we would like to invite everyone and anyone who would like to come,” says the post.
The562’s love and prayers are with the player, his family, and the Cabrillo community. We are withholding the student’s name until the family has made public comment.
