There are championship games and playoff runs on the top 10 moments of the year list, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a single bigger game than the Long Beach Poly and Millikan football matchup on October 11.
Millikan went on to win in come-behind fashion, snapping a 15-year 81-game Long Beach Poly Moore League winning streak in a 53-40 victory. The win was headlined by Moore League Player of the Year and Los Al transfer Anthony League, who carried the ball 27 times for 258 yards and four touchdowns.
“My mind is blank when I’m running, whoever’s in my face I’m either gonna make a move or I’m gonna run through you,” said League after the win. “Half the time they were in my face, so I had to run through them.”
The game was put on everyone’s radar a year prior after the pair went into overtime in a thrilling 26-23 Long Beach Poly win. The anticipation built up into what ended up being an all-time classic in 2024 at a sold out DeHaven Stadium.
“We wanted it,” added Millikan coach Romeo Pellum of the historic win. “Our kids wanted it more. They were hungry. They left it all on the field today, and that’s what we needed to beat that team.”
The win marked another historic achievement for Millikan in its fifth year of the Pellum era, which has proven to be an era of growth for the Rams’ football program. Millikan finished their season undefeated and earned their first outright Moore League championship since 1973.
