If you wanted to see championship basketball in 2024, St. Anthony was the place to be. The Saints’ girls’ and boys’ basketball programs simultaneously conducted their own historic playoff runs that ended in a double-header of championship wins at Azusa Pacific University on February 23, 2024.
The pair’s CIF-SS championship wins both came in Division 2AA, with the girls starting things off in a 64-58 comeback win against Moreno Valley followed by a 48-42 win for the boys against Rolling Hills Prep.
It was the boys’ program’s first title since 2000 when the St. Anthony’s girls’ team also won a championship the same year. The last time the girls’ won a championship was in 2016.
It was a star studded performance for the Saints’ in their championship games with seniors Ryann Bennett and Quincy Phillips at the helm of their team’s respective wins.
The Saints’ girls trailed for the first 25 minutes to the Vikings before Bennett kicked into gear finding all of her 14 points in the second half including a handful of key shots from behind the arc. She added a game-high five assists while Kadence Lloyd went 5/9 for a game-high 22 points.
Phillips continued a productive senior-campaign with a game-high 20 points against Rolling Hills Prep while playing 32 minutes. He also added a team-high seven rebounds in a dominant championship performance for the Saints.
