COLLEGE

Mykelle Richards, Long Beach State Basketball

Freshman Mykelle Richards recorded a career-high 15 points as she shot 70.0% from the field (7-10) with one triple. She had an all-around solid performance as she added four rebounds and two steals in just under 30 minutes of action.

Aaron Wilson, Long Beach State Water Polo

Long Beach State won its first-ever Big West Tournament championship to claim its second bid to the NCAA Tournament in the last four years. LBSU senior goalkeeper Aaron Wilson was named the Big West Tournament MVP after making eight saves in the championship game. 

Hadassah Odeyale, LBCC Volleyball

LBCC middle blocker Hadassah Odeyale was one of the Vikings’ leaders in last weekend’s SoCal Regional Championship, which qualified LBCC as the top seed into the state tournament. Odeyale had eight kills on .316 hitting plus seven blocks in the win.

Jose Mariscal, LBCC Soccer

Jose Mariscal put up a hat trick (the first postseason hat trick in school history) to propel LBCC to the SoCal Regional Championship last weekend, earning the Vikings the top seed into this weekend’s state tournament.

Mike Guardabascio
An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
