Thomas Jones, Wilson Football

Thomas Jones did his best “flu game” impression on Friday night after missing school Thursday with a cold, hauling in seven catches for 107 yards in Wilson’s last-second win against Village Christian.

Cedra Talaga, Long Beach Poly Volleyball

Sophomore Cedra “Cika” Talaga had a team-high 9 kills and 3 aces for Long Beach Poly as the Jackrabbits beat Cypress in their CIF State opener, before the Jackrabbits fell in Bakersfield in the next round.

COLLEGE

Mookie Davis, LBCC Football

Long Beach City College is going bowling after defeating Citrus in their regular season finale. Long Beach Poly alum Mookie Davis came up huge in the win with a last-second interception in the end zone to seal the win for the Vikings.

Savannah Tucker, Long Beach State Basketball

Savannah Tucker recorded a career-high 29 points in Long Beach State’s road victory over previously undefeated Sacramento State. Tucker led the Beach in scoring in both games last week with an average of 22.5 points per game on 48.1% shooting (13-27). She made a trio of threes as she shot 33.3% from behind the arc, and 72.7% from the charity stripe (16-22). Additionally, she chipped in 3.5 rebounds per game, while leading the team with a total of 10 assists and five steals.

Mike Guardabascio
An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
