After four years in charge of the Cabrillo Jaguars football program, head coach Shane Gonzales confirmed that he’s stepped down as head coach.

Gonzales has returned to Mayfair High’s coaching staff, where he spent six seasons as an assistant before taking the head job at Cabrillo.

Gonzales took over the program at a tumultuous time, hired in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Jags were unable to field a team in the 2021 spring season, then went 1-8 that fall in their return to competition. It was far from guaranteed that the Jags’ program would survive the disruptions of the pandemic, but Gonzales’ stewardship was crucial in navigating that transition.

Cabrillo then started off the 2022 season 4-0, including a thrilling last-second victory at Lynwood, which will go down as one of the greatest moments in Cabrillo Football’s brief history. Those four wins were later forfeited due to the use of an ineligible player, but the Jaguars continued to make progress as a program.

Cabrillo went 2-8 in each of the last two seasons, but in 2024 they were able to win their first Moore League game since 2019, a 21-13 victory on Sep. 27.

There are now two head coaching vacancies in Moore League football, with Jordan and now Cabrillo in search of new leadership for the 2025 season.
