Football: LBCC Pours It On In Win Against Orange Coast

The LBCC football team kept their stride while hosting Orange Coast college Saturday afternoon, leaning on an offensive outpoor to earn their fifth straight victory 42-17. The Vikings racked up 423 yards of total offense in the win and poured on five touchdowns to five different players.

“I’m proud of the effort overall and we did some really pretty things in the passing game,” said LBCC coach Brett Peabody. “But we still have to clean a lot of things up. Golden West has beaten us three straight times and they’re coming into the house next Saturday. We’ve got to be a lot better to beat them.”

The Vikings were led by QB Jett Peddy who tossed an efficient 23/32 for 301 yards passing and four touchdowns. After the game, Peddy credited his team for his offensive success.

“All my receivers played a great game today,” he said. “I have to clean some things up on the reads and be more accurate but overall everything was there and open. Coach was dialing up great plays and we just gotta be consistent going into Golden West but I’m proud of my guys and my o-line for holding up.

“He did some good things overall,” added Peabody of Peddy. “He made some beautiful throws when he had to but we’re still trying to get some consistency in some different areas but Jett keeps progressing in the right direction.”

The Vikings got their scoring party started on the opening kickoff from an insane Troy TW Crozier kickoff return that went 91 yards down the field for an opening play touchdown.

LBCC added three more touchdowns before the half including an Anthony Fabian plunge into the endzone from two yards out. Peddy then found his first two touchdowns of the game from connections to receivers Matthew Dragich and Long Beach Poly alum Tyson Bordeaux. Orange Coast found a field goal from Calvin Kirchoff and the Vikings went into the half up 28-0.

“It was tough because we didn’t have many possessions in the first half,” said Peabody, who thought that his team could have found even more success. “We only ran 24 plays, so it was a little tough getting into a rhythm.”

The Vikings scored two more touchdowns in the second half on a 37-yard connection from Peddy to Dylan Clark and a 24-yarder to Norvell Holmes.

Orange Coast found the endzone in the fourth quarter thanks to QB Zach Congalton who rushed for a 19-yard score. Congalton then backed it up at the end of the fourth with an impressive 85-yard scamper for his second touchdown. He finished the game with 13 rushes for 151 yards and those two touchdowns.

Along with the two touchdowns given up at the end of the game, LBCC committed 11 total penalties that cost them 126 total yards in a game with heavy involvement from the refs. Orange Coast also committed 8 penalties for 118 total yards.

“One drive in the first half we had 45-yards in penalties on just that one drive and that can’t happen, said Peabody. “Especially against the next three opponents we play starting with Golden West. So we need to clean up (those penalties). The backup guys came in and they gotta play a little bit better. We don’t want to be giving up two touchdowns like that in the fourth quarter but overall I thought the defense played quite well.”

For LBCC, Clark finished the game with two receptions and a game high 77 receiving yards to go along with a touchdown. Holmes ended his afternoon with a game-high four grabs for 76 yards and a touchdown.

The Vikings will gear up to play Golden West at 6pm next Saturday, and will conclude their regular season with Mt. San Antonio and Citrus.

“We started off 0-2 and it was rough. But our guys came together as a family and we’re on a roll right now,” added Peddy. “We just gotta keep rolling.”
