Long Beach Poly visits Wilson Friday at 7pm for the 92nd anniversary playing of the Big Game, Long Beach’s oldest sports tradition and rivalry. The Jackrabbits (2-5, 2-1) come into the week needing a win badly following their loss to Millikan last week. Wilson (5-2, 2-1) has cause to feel more confident than they typically do against their rival given Poly’s struggles this year.
The biggest clash should be between a revamped Wilson offense that’s putting up more than 30 points per game, against a struggling Jackrabbit defense that’s given up 254 points already this season, just 10 points shy of the highest total allowed by a Poly defense in any season the last 30 years.
The Bruins ran the ball successfully against Poly last year but were shut out 46-0–if Wilson can control the ball and put up points they’ll be in it this season. The Wilson defense has also allowed a city-best mark of just 96 points, giving fans optimism they can slow down a Jackrabbits offense that has been coming into its own, putting up 47 points against Lakewood and 40 against Millikan.
