It was only a matter of time before Wilson would pick up the momentum while visiting Cabrillo on Friday night, even after being knotted up at seven points in the second quarter. The Bruins would eventually settle in, scoring 42 unanswered points including three touchdowns from Jamell Edmonds en route to 49-7 victory.
“I just told the kids to settle down. We just had to settle down and do our job,” said Wilson coach Travis Clark of the slow start. “We knew exactly what they were gonna do and I just wanted them to settle down and have fun. The most important thing was to have fun and to execute and they just started to settle down and make plays.”
Alongside Edmonds ran fellow RB Deuce Weston who scored the games opening touchdown on a short plunge into the endzone. Weston has now scored in each of his three games since gaining eligibility this season, and got his work handled early on against Cabrillo leaving room for Edmonds to take over.
“We already know the kid is special,” said Clark of Westin. “We’re just trying to get him in shape. He’s still not in complete game shape and he’s like a Ferrari. You don’t drive a Ferrari everyday. So we’re just trying to get him tuned up with the bulk of our league play coming up with Poly this week so we just want to get him ready.”
Edmonds found the endzone twice in the second quarter before QB Elacion Saxton found Maxwell Barbee for another score. The Bruins went into the half leading 28-7.
Wilson concluded their scoring in the third quarter with touchdowns from Kori Scott and a connection from Saxton to Jagger Kohagura. Jamell Edmond also added his third touchdown to conclude his impressive night.
In the last two weeks, Wilson has found touchdowns from seven different players and six players with multiple scores. The Bruins scored 49 points for the second straight game, and Clark says he’s been pleased with the team’s ability to spread the ball around midway through Moore League play.
“I’m happy that everybody’s doing some things, I want all of these players to have some success. So if we’re getting as many kids in the endzone as possible that’s great. It’s nothing that’s calculated or thought about, it’s just something that’s occurred. It’s a great thing, it means we’re spreading the ball around and everyones getting touches which means we’re executing.”
With their only Moore League loss coming to Millikan thus far, the Bruins are sitting well in the mix at a top four finish and guaranteed playoff spot. They’ll host Long Beach Poly next week.
For Cabrillo, the Jags found a score in the first quarter on a connection from Danny Lopez to Israel Clayton. The Jags sit at fifth in the Moore League, but will face off against Indian Springs next week before returning to league play on Oct. 25 at Long Beach Poly.
