HIGH SCHOOL

Deuce Jefferson, Long Beach Poly Football

Poly junior QB Deuce Jefferson led the Jackrabbits to a 47-20 win over Lakewood last week with his best game of the season. He was 9/18 for 184 yards and four TDs passing, plus 112 yards rushing with another touchdown–the 79-yard rushing touchdown that sprung the game open in the third quarter.

Avery Peck, Long Beach Poly Cross Country

Avery Peck set a new course record at El Dorado Park just days after setting a new school record for Long Beach Poly in the three-mile. She won the first Moore League XC meet of the season with a time of 17:20.

Max Ramirez, Millikan Cross Country

It’s a new face but the same school on top of the Moore League boys’ cross country world. Millikan’s Max Ramirez followed in the footsteps of Rams great Jason Parra, taking the baton for 2024 and winning El Dorado with a time of 15:00.

Nico Tramontano, Wilson Water Polo

Wilson boys’ water polo won its Moore League showcase game against Cabrillo last week by a wide margin, with Nico Tramontano leading the way scoring four goals for the Bruins.

Zain Dahdul, Millikan Water Polo

Millikan’s Zain Dahdul led the Rams to a 16-6 win over Lakewood in the Moore League Showcase. Dahdul scored a game-high five goals to lead Millikan to the victory.

Keyon Smith, Cabrillo Football

Cabrillo’s Keyon Smith helped lead the Jaguars to their first Moore League win in five years over Compton last week. Smith had seven pass breakups on defense including four to stop Compton from scoring, and scored an offensive touchdown as well.

COLLEGE

Natalie Glenn, Long Beach State Volleyball

Natalie Glenn led Long Beach State to a pair of wins to start Big West play, including a season-high 20 kills at UC Davis.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
