Millikan running back Anthony League, a Cal commit, has been putting up gaudy numbers so far this year. Some of his game totals look like solid seasons worth of stats, like a win over Cabrillo that saw him run for three touchdowns and catch another. Through four games he had 620 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground.
But while the cameras are focused on League, he’s putting the focus on the guys in the trenches: his offensive line. League took his O-Line to a sandwich shop near Millikan last week to make sure the guys taking care of him were taken care of.
“I took all of my O LINE out to Subway to eat today! I’m BROKE now!” he tweeted, adding, “They are the TEAM!”
Recognizing the guys up front isn’t just lip service–or sandwich service–from League. Every post he’s made on social media about his stats has highlighted the linemen, and he’s led interviews with crediting them as well.
“I needed to take them out, for them getting me to 600 yards in four games,” said League after the Rams’ win over Cabrillo. “I was obliged to feed them, and if they’re going to keep doing that for the rest of the season, I’m going to have to take them out again.”
ASU commit Maki Stewart, Kapono Mao, Branden Meza, Kade Hegedus, and Jessie Wishon were the beneficiaries of League’s generosity, just as he’s been the beneficiary of their hard work up front.
“It meant a lot, it really did mean a lot, spending his hard-earned money on us as a team, making sure we eat,” said Wishon.
Millikan head coach Romeo Pellum said that the move by League was just the latest example of his team’s camaraderie, pointing out that there’s been no conflict between League and Xavier Jones, the Rams’ other top back who’s put up some big stats of his own.
“We have a really good brotherhood with our team,” said Pellum. “Our line is really really close together–Anthony and X are real close. I think that’s why our running attack is the way it is, because there are no egos, and those guys all get together and do a great job together.”
As a team, the Rams rushed for 1,244 yards in their first four games, an average of nine yards per carry, plus 17 touchdowns on the ground as well. Four different players have run touchdowns in for Millikan.
