Luke TATSU Johnson Foundation events are back for an eighth year of raising money for childhood cancer research. The foundation is named for Luke Tatsu Johnson, who was a Wilson High School golfer. He lost his life to complications from leukemia (AML) in 2016. He was 16 years old.
The golf tournament, dinner and auction will be Oct. 4 at Recreation Park Golf Course and the inaugural Luke-toberfest Move4Luke 5K is Oct. 13 at the Long Beach Bike Path.
Luke’s parents Todd and Rena Johnson created the fundraisers.
“We have surpassed the half million mark in donations since inception,” Todd Johnson said. “We are very proud and we know Luke is very proud of us as well as we’ve donated $500,000 to pediatric cancer related causes as well as another $42,000 in academic scholarships to the boys and girls at Wilson High School.”
“Big charities don’t need us,” Rena Johnson added. “The small, niche organizations who are doing the intense work — that’s where we feel good about making a difference.”
Luke’s middle name Tatsu is the sign of the dragon.
