After an 0-4 start against a difficult non-league schedule, the St. Anthony Saints hit the win column on Friday night at Brentwood School, emerging with a 27-14 victory. The win is the first for Saints head coach Jeff Magdaleno as his team improves to 1-4 heading into Del Rey League play in two weeks.

The Saints and Eagles were locked in a defensive struggle for most of the first half, until the home team took a 7-0 lead with just 15 seconds left in the first half. That was enough time for Jasiah Lolesio-Pua to take the kickoff and return it all the way to the house for a game-tying touchdown, making it a 7-7 game at the half.

St. Anthony rolled that momentum into the second half and fed the ball to senior running back Nate Martinez, who had a pair of rushing touchdowns in the second half. His first score made it a 14-7 lead for the Saints, and after a fumble recovery by the St. Anthony defense, QB Aidan Jones connected with Christian Martin for the 21-7 lead less than 3 minutes into the third quarter.

The visitors would eventually score 27 unanswered points as Martinez punched in his second score from 25 yards out, putting his team up 27-7 early in the fourth quarter.

The Saints would hang on from there, earning a quality road win to add another encouraging result in their season. They’ll be on a bye next week and then travel to play Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary on Oct. 4.
