The562’s coverage of football in 2024-25 is sponsored by The Terry Donahue Memorial California Showcase.
One of the best games in Southern California tonight is also one of the most interesting rivalries in America. Lakewood (2-1) travels to Mayfair (2-1) for their annual Milk Bucket rivalry game. The two schools were once separated only by dairy fields, so for decades they’ve played for the unique rivalry trophy of a bronzed milk bucket.
The game will pit Lakewood’s vaunted defense–which has shut down Carlsbad and St. Anthony and only gave up 29 to Edison in a loss–against a high-octane Monsoons offense that’s put up 49 points each of the last two weeks.
Jojo Apisala has led the Lancers with 113 yards per game on the ground and three touchdowns, with a Lancers attack that has been run-first over the first three weeks, allowing QB Kade Casillas to make big plays when needed.
The Lancers D will be tested by a Soons offense led by QB Jeremiah Calvin, a three-star prospect with offers from Fresno State, Idaho, and others.
The game will be at Ron Yary Stadium at 7pm. Lakewood will host Compton next Friday as they open Moore League play.
