There will be another local matchup to open the season at Compton College on Friday night as Compton hosts Rancho Dominguez Prep.
Compton is playing all of its home games at Compton College again this year while its campus is under construction, and while they wait for a new home, coach Calvin Bryant will have his team running a new offense. After years of running the double-wing formation Compton will now be in the spread offensive look with a lot more passing and a lot less running. Compton alum and offensive mind Lamar Freeman has take over as offensive coordinator.
“I’ve never had so much fun coaching in my life,” said Freeman, who will take over play-calling duties full time. “Man, I’m excited. Every day I wake up excited, looking at how to attack each day. Some days are frustrating while we’re putting in this new [offensive] system, but the kids are buying in. I’m living the dream right now.”
Sophomore quarterback Francis Madera is back and excited to spread the ball around to skill guys like Diontae Dill, Ronnie Mixon, Nate Willard, Robert Smith and Ameer Freeman.
Rancho Dominguez hasn’t has a winning season since 2015 when it went 6-5 under coach Wayne Crawford.
