Most athletes work their way up through the lower levels of their sport, waiting for their opportunity to shine on varsity. But some athletes are ready to compete at the highest level as soon as they step foot on campus. Those rare athletes tend to become synonymous with their schools, as they occupy the spotlight for 3-4 years while carrying the metaphorical banner for their athletic programs.

In J-Town, look no further than Asia Edwards, who was a standout in multiple sports for the Panthers. She may not have won Moore League MVP or led J-Town to a title, but she helped elevate the girls’ basketball program to new heights, and was a star for the brand new flag football program. When Jordan was tasked with hosting the Moore League track & field finals at Poly High, there was Asia helping to set up hurdles. Her leadership and tenacity was contagious, and she operated like an extra coach on the court or on the field.

Always wearing her trademark glasses and often with a big smile on her face, Edwards was a tremendous ambassador for Jordan High.

At Millikan, the hype around incoming freshman Ryan Pellum was well known, and he certainly delivered on those expectations. Despite his debut football season being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pellum hit the scene and showed he would be a force to be reckoned with for four seasons.

With older brother Romeo Pellum coaching the Rams and putting together perhaps the most successful run in program history, the Pellum name was synonymous with the new Millikan Football. The dedicated Pellum Family cheering section had a lot to celebrate over the years, as Pellum was a two-time Moore League Player of the Year and became the highest recruit in Millikan Football history, ultimately signing with the University of Oregon.

The electrifying wide receiver/defensive back/return specialist captivated fans at DeHaven Stadium, and the Millikan student section grew year after year, developing a special atmosphere on Friday nights in East Long Beach. The Rams will look to keep that momentum going as Ryan is off to college, and his impact will surely be felt for years to come.
