The Moore League welcomed its newest sport into the fold in 2023-24, as girls’ flag football took center stage last fall. Kicking off with a showcase at Cabrillo High School in September, the league showed off its talent and sportsmanship in what turned out to be an exciting debut season.
With female athletes finally getting a chance to showcase their football skills, athletes from several different winter and spring sports tried their hand on the gridiron. That made for some unique matchups between athletes from softball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, track & field, and more.
Jordan High senior Asia Edwards was one of those athletes who got to try out a new sport for J-Town, and was immediately one of the top players in the league.
“This is my first time on a flag football team, but I grew up liking all sports,” said Edwards. “I was born to like sports, so I’m glad it’s in my blood.”

Long Beach Poly won the first ever Moore League title with an unbeaten record, and it was a special achievement for a group of athletes eager to make some history for their school.
“So many things happen at this place, so to be a part of the history and tradition that this school has, that makes it all worth it,” said Poly head coach and athletic director Rob Shock after winning the title. “I mean, you already know, we’re a family of green and gold. I always try to do what’s best for Poly. And that’s just a special moment for me. I wanted it as much as the girls did, and we wanted to win it outright.”
