Millikan Athletics Raises Money While Honoring Seniors

The562’s coverage of Millikan athletics in the 2023-24 school year is sponsored by Curtis Boyer.

Last month the Millikan Rams celebrated their senior student-athletes going on to play at the collegiate level with their annual spaghetti dinner and silent auction fundraiser in Howard Lyon Gym.

This event has been running for more than a decade as once again Millikan student-athletes sold the tickets for the dinner that was donated by John’s, Avenue 3, Portofino, Amazon Fresh and others. Silent auction items were also donated by local businesses, and those results were announced after the Rams took a moment to honor the seniors who will be continuing their academic and athletic careers in college.

“This first started just to refurbish a couple of things,” Millikan girls’ athletic director Lorene Morgan said. “We needed a new scorers table (in the gym), and I say ‘new’ but I’m not even sure we had a scorers table at that time.”

Millikan got the table and more so now the latest goal is new scoreboards. The Rams and Morgan have tried for years to get them, but COVID and rising prices go in their way.

“We are in the process of approving the scoreboard that we want,” she said. “I am hopeful that we’ll have it in place for our sports next season.”

Millikan soccer star and Moore League Offensive Player of the Year Audrey Stewart was among the 40+ student-athletes honored, and she will study biology at UC Riverside.

Stewart had a list of schools that offered her specific focus of crime scene investigation and forensics, and UC Riverside put itself on that list after Stewart played in a random exhibition game.

The Puerto Rico women’s national soccer team is coached by UC Riverside coach, Nat Gonzalez. When they needed a state-side exhibition last year, he called a friend at Slammers FC to get a practice team together.

Stewart was one of the Slammers players selected to scrimmage the Puerto Ricans.

“They originally told me I wasn’t going to play, and we had driven all the way out to Chula Vista,” Stewart said, “But I went in about 15 minutes in. I scored and drew the game-tying penalty kick. Within the week I was in contact (with UCR).”

Stewart joins a group of former Rams girls’ soccer players to enter the Big West Conference.

“(Millikan coach Tino Nunez) runs the team like a college team,” Stewart added. “He expects a lot out of us in practice and in games. The way he runs the program puts me in the right mindset to get into that kind of rhythm in college.”
