With all of the top returners opting to pursue their academic and athletic careers somewhere else with new coach Chris Acker taking over, the Long Beach State men’s basketball roster is starting to come together via transfers.
The latest addition for the Beach is junior guard TJ Wainwright who arrives after two seasons at Robert Morris. The Los Angeles native averaged 10 points and 20 minutes a game last season.
“(Wainwright) brings a ton of experience, he’s ultra talented, competitive, and loves to be challenged,” Acker said in an official statement. “He plays the right way and is only consumed with winning and getting better. Bringing TJ back to California was a must for our program as we will rely on his leadership to help us as we look to do special things here at the Beach.”
Wainwright (6’3” 180-pounds) went to Westchester HS before attending Monteverde Academy where he helped his team win a prep national championship while averaging 15.7 points and shooting over 40 percent from 3-point range.
After playing all 33 games as a freshman at Robert Morris, Wainwright emerged as their sixth-man last season. He shot 33.3 percent from behind the arc while making 32 3-pointers.
Wainwright, Devin Askew and Derrick Michael Xzavierro are the Division 1 transfers brought in by Acker and his staff over the last few weeks. They join incoming freshmen Kam Martin and Andrew Nagy as the latest additions.
