Sammie Hamilton’s terrific high school career continued on Saturday at Mt. SAC, as the Wilson senior added more accolades to her impressive resume.
Hamilton won the CIF-SS Division 1 championship in the girls’ 500 freestyle, posting a time of 4:46.63. She won the event by more than six seconds over the field, and was less than seven seconds off the Division 1 meet record. Long Beach Poly junior Belle Puckett finished seventh in the event with a time of 5:00.28.
Hamilton also recorded a fifth-place finish in the 200 free, swimming a 1:48.58 to earn All-American recognition in both events.
She also started off the 400 free relay for the Bruins and threw down an impressive time of 50.80, helping Wilson to a second-place finish in the consolation final. Hamilton’s 50.80 split is a new school and Moore League record, supplanting former Olympian and Wilson great, Jessica Hardy.
Poly’s Sofia Brys made it to the championship final in the 100 butterfly, taking ninth in 56.06.
On the boys’ side, Wilson’s Wyatt Mitchell took eighth in the 200 free with a time of 1:39.28. For the Poly boys, sophomore Lucas Jue was third in the 500 free, clocking a 4:25.42 to earn an All-American nod. Jue was also sixth in the 200 IM, swimming a 1:51.27.
Next up is the CIF State Swimming & Diving Championships, held May 9-11 at the Clovis Olympic Swim Complex.
