Anaheim native Andrew Nagy is officially the first high school NLI commitment secured by new Long Beach State men’s basketball coach Chris Acker and his staff.

Nagy, a 6’9” forward from Nike EYBL Veritas Academy, joins Kam Martin as the only members of the incoming class of 2024-25 for the Beach. Martin, a 6’4” guard from Maryland, is honoring his commitment to LBSU during the fall signing period.

“(Nagy) is a very tough kid and I believe that he has a chance to be a very good player for our program,” Acker said. “He is tough, smart and competitive. He comes from a great family and played at a very high level.”

Nagy averaged 11.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while at Veritas Academy. He also played for Orange Lutheran High School and West Coast Elite in AAU.

“His character and his commitment to academics and winning is why I believe he is going to be someone that sets the foundation for our future here at the Beach,” Acker added.

Acker also recently announced the hiring of his assistant coaching staff John Montgomery, Anthony Santos and Phillip Scott.

“I wanted my staff to have a willingness to help our student athletes succeed in the classroom and on the court,” Acker said. “I wanted my staff to be in line with my vision of both supporting and protecting the mental health of our student athletes. I wanted them to have experience in developing guys and helping them reach the next level of playing professional basketball. I wanted them to be champions at the collegiate level and have had experience competing in the NCAA tournament.”

Montgomery comes to LBSU after nine seasons on Eran Ganot’s staff at Hawai’i and spent the last three seasons as Associate Head Coach. He will concentrate on the Beach offense while supporting the program in recruiting, scouting and development.

“I have a proud family legacy in Long Beach, with my grandfather Jack serving as the first Athletic Director and my father Mike, who also played for the program, having been inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame,” Montgomery said. “Being able to join that legacy and build on it while reuniting with Coach Acker is an absolute dream. I’m excited to join the rest of the staff and create something special at the Beach.”

Santos joins LBSU after 12 seasons with Big West rival Cal State Fullerton where he helped the Titans earn two NCAA Tournament appearances. He will be the program’s defensive coordinator while assisting with game preparation and recruiting.

Scott has spent the last three years serving as the Director of Los Angeles Premier prep, a local basketball academy which he co-founded along with former NBA player and Chris Acker’s brother, Alex Acker.
