On the last day of Moore League girls’ lacrosse here in Long Beach, Wilson continued its winning ways with a 12-3 victory over Lakewood.
“We had a great season with some ups and downs at some really tough games and I’m glad we’re sitting where we are sitting,” Wilson coach Vic Escoto said. “We either play May 3 or May 4 (in the CIF Playoffs) so we’re pretty excited.”
Wilson midfielder Megan Ligenza scored a game-high five goals and said, “As a team, we have grown together throughout our season and have a better chance this year. I feel like everyone was really excited this season just to get out there and play and everyone was just trying their best effort. We have a lot of freshmen and most of our team is underclassmen. Have another good couple of years and have a lot of promise, everyone’s athletic and everyone’s so hungry, so it’s looking good.”
When these teams played in the first round of league action Wilson beat Lakewood 14-0 so the Lancers showed marked improvement all over the field in the second round.
“We’re really young,” Lakewood coach Fernando Viramontes said. “We had six freshmen, five sophomores, and three juniors. A lot of returning underclassmen. From day one I see a big improvement so I’m excited for what’s to come. Three seniors are leaving us. You know they started the program here at Lakewood. They’re part of it and the celebration is for them, so excited.”
Senior attacker Brianna Del Orbe led the charge for the Lancers and said, “I think honestly being a part of this team has made me feel like I’ve gained another family. I feel like it’s taught me how to be cooperative with others and working well, having good teamwork.honestly just hoping and wishing them success and for this team to be able to move forward and gain more girls each year.”
The CIF Southern Section playoff brackets will be released on Saturday.
