It was a Moore League girls’ lacrosse nail biter on Monday when Compton visited Lakewood and left with a 9-5 victory. It’s also a marquee victory for Compton in only its second year of having a girls’ lacrosse program.
“I’m really proud of the effort that the girls put in and that we really were able to get a couple wins on board,” Compton coach Christine Page said. “I think we have some middle schoolers coming up who are looking really good so I’m hoping that when we continue to build a pipeline of lacrosse in Compton (including , we’re trying to change the game a little bit.”
Page specifically referenced connecting with the Harlem Lacrosse program that wants to, “Provide opportunities, relationships, and experiences that activate the skills and traits to put youth on a path to success as students, athletes, and citizens,” according to its mission statement.
Compton sophomore Jaylnn Davis led the way with a game-high six goals.
“We got better, last year we didn’t win any games and we won four so I’m really excited,” Davis said.
Lakewood junior Pina Uigaese scored twice and said the Lancers program is growing through familiarity.
“I’m getting to know my teammates as players on and off the field,” she said. “Now we’re getting the flow of the game with learning how to use our sticks more because we’re new.”
“The game is growing at Lakewood and a young squad with only three seniors graduating,” Lakewood coach Fernando Viramontes added. “There’s not many wins but the girls are having fun in the game. This squad sticks together.”
