Poly vs. Wilson
Poly bumped its record up to 2-0 with a 17-4 victory over visiting Wilson.
The Jackrabbits were led by commanding performances from senior Victor Lim and junior Nga Pham. Lim and Pham combined to sweep their mixed doubles games. Pham dominated both of her singles matches, and Lim, teamed with junior Josh Chhauy, won both his boys’ doubles matches. Lim and Pham contributed to 4 wins each. Chhauy (Mixed Doubles, Boys’ Doubles) and Soki Phay (Mixed Doubles, Girls’ Singles) also swept their three matches.
The highlights for the Bruins came, as expected, from Abhishek Jain. The defending Moore League singles champion went 3-1 for the night, losing only in his first mixed doubles match. Jain was stretched a bit in the opening game of his first singles match by Poly’s Nick Jensen, 21-18, before restoring order in the second. His second singles match against Danny Lam followed a similar pattern.
The Jackrabbits began the afternoon by sweeping the opening round of Mixed Doubles matches to take a quick 3-0 lead. Their advantage extended to 9-0 before Wilson put a win on the board.
In addition to Jain’s three victories, Wilson’s girls’ doubles pair of Alexis Herrera and Susi Martinez won a tight three set match against Poly’s #2 pair of Theany Heng and Cass Hervas, 21-10, 16-21, 24-20. The Bruins mixed pair of Jain and Martinez also won a three set match in front of a packed and loud Poly gym to conclude the evening.
Poly hosts Lakewood on Thursday, March 7.
Millikan vs. Jordan
Millikan put up their first win of the season against visiting Jordan 16-5.
Junior Chloe Stevens led the Rams by winning both of her girls’ singles matches. Millikan also swept Mixed Doubles, Girls’ Doubles, and Girls’ Singles.
Junior Jonathan Kelly won all of his matches as well, teaming with Vickie Lam in mixed doubles and Joshua Kelley in boys doubles.
Millikan will play Wilson next Tuesday in the Bruins gym.
Cabrillo vs. Marina
One day after dispatching Chino Hills 15-6, Cabrillo defeated Marina in a home match Tuesday, 14-7, to bump their record to 4-1.
The Jaguars got out of the gate fast by winning two of the three opening mixed doubles matches and gradually stretched their lead through the afternoon.
Cabrillo’s 4-1 dominance of mixed doubles, led by number 1 pair Brian Habacon and Jasmin Ramos, played a key role in the Jaguars’ success.
Boys doubles proved to be Cabrillo’s other strength, going 3-1 for the afternoon.
Cabrillo’s Habacon also swept his boys’ singles matches, while Ramos did the same in her girls’ singles events. The two of them accounted for nearly half of the Jaguars’ victories.
