Four Moore League girls’ soccer teams are headed to the CIF Southern Section playoffs highlighted by Millikan being ranked No. 4 overall and reaching the Open Division.
The Rams (18-2-1) won a second consecutive Moore League title and are guaranteed two playoffs games this week. They will visit Mira Costa on Thursday before hosting the same matchup on Saturday. The winner of the combined score advances.
“It speaks to the culture the program has been able to establish,” Millikan coach Tino Nunez said of making the Open Division. “Our belief, hard work and program above all approach has allowed us to reach limits we never thought were possible.”
Millikan clinched its fifth league title in the last six years by beating Wilson twice in the last week of the regular season. Senior Audrey Stewart scored in both of those games.
“We’re not playing for ourselves,” Stewart said. “We’re out there for each other and we’re out there for the program. We need to keep our heads straight. We need to go in, not cocky, but definitely confident.”
Mira Costa (15-1-3) won the Bay League and has only allowed 12 goals this season.
Long Beach Poly (9-3) finished second in the Moore League and will start the Division 2 playoffs by hosting Rosary Academy (14-3-5) in the first round on Thursday. Rosary Academy has only allowed 10 goals this season.
Wilson (9-7-2) is on the road in Division 2 after finishing third in league. The Bruins visit Buena (15-3-1) on Thursday.
Lakewood (7-8-2) is a wild card team in Division 5 and will visit Santa Ana (11-9-1) on Tuesday to face the third place finishers out of the Orange Coast League.
