There was plenty to be excited and concerned about for Long Beach State men’s basketball after its season opener on Monday night at Portland.
The Beach gave up a 12-2 run to start the game and came all the way back to make it a one-possession game late but missed opportunities down the stretch cost LBSU in a 78-73 loss.
Portland went on a 10-0 run in just two minutes after the eight-minute media timeout in the second half to pad its lead. LBSU ruined its own comeback effort with turnovers and missed field goals.
LBSU junior Jadon Jones finished with 23 points including an anomaly of three different four-point plays. Fellow guard Marcus Tsohonis finished with 17 points, while Aboubacar Traore chipped in 16 points to go with a team-high nine rebounds and five assists.
Vukasin Masic scored a game-high 25 points for Portland.
The Beach shot 65 percent (15-for-23) from the free throw line and committed 14 turnovers. Only five of those were recorded as Portland steals.
LBSU visits DePaul in Chicago on Saturday in a nationally televised game that will be broadcast on Fox Sports 2 tipping off at 7 p.m. PT.
