The rivalry continues tonight as Lakewood hosts Mayfair in the Milk Bucket game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
These two schools that were originally separated by a large dairy farm play for a small milk bucket trophy. Lakewood has won 16 of the 25 Milk Bucket games that started in 1962.
They played some epic overtime games in the early 2000’s but Lakewood beat Mayfair for the bucket eight straight times from 2006-14. After some coaching changes and a three year hiatus, the Monsoons have won the last five Milk Bucket meetings.
Lakewood (1-2) has played three very close games and is coming off a disappointing loss to Laguna Hills at home. The Lancers defense, led by linebacker Tyree McCowen and his 45 tackles, has forced eight turnovers and will need to be disruptive against the Monsoons.
Mayfair (2-1) have scored over 40 points in their last two wins over Bellflower and Mira Costa. Junior quarterback Jeremiah Calvin is averaging 220 yards passing per game with five touchdowns and no interceptions. Five Mayfair players have combined for 10 rushing touchdowns.
