At the end of every school year we look back to reminisce on the accomplishments that defined Long Beach sports over the last 12 months. This year has been extra special because of the variety of schools and sports represented on this list— which is a hallmark of our diverse city and athletic community.
No. 10 – Poly Football Beats Mission Viejo
No. 9 – Poly Adds Girls’ Flag Football
No. 8 – Lakewood Football Hosts CIF Championship
The script felt almost too serendipitous for a Hollywood movie. After years of patiently waiting its turn, Lakewood High School finally got its new field turf/track stadium completed in the Fall. And it was just in time to host a CIF Southern Section football championship game at the newly refurbished John Ford Stadium.
Unfortunately, the Lancers lost the Division 8 title game to visiting Northwood, but that didn’t stop them from making history. It was the first time a Moore League team hosted a CIF football championship game on campus, and it’s the first time the Lancers are playing for a championship since 1970 when John Ford himself was the coach.
The Lakewood sideline was packed with former Lakewood players and distinguished alums, including Lancers football coach Justin Utupo.
