The562’s coverage of Millikan athletics in the 2022-23 school year is sponsored by Curtis Boyer.
It was just a case of history repeating for Millikan at the CIF-SS Division 1 Track and Field Finals at Moorpark on Saturday, as Rams junior Jason Parra successfully defended his D1 title in the 3200.
Parra is the school and city record-holder in the event, and has consistently been under nine minutes this year, which he was again at Moorpark, taking gold in a time of 8:58.26.
When asked if it was a big deal to him to defend his title, Parra’s eyes lit up.
“It was a huge deal to me,” he said. “I’ve watched this race from last year a lot of times and in my opinion, it’s my best race ever. So it’s not easy, coming back here and trying to meet those self-expectations.”
Parra’s race strategy from 2022 worked in 2023 as well, starting the race slower as opposed to the furious pace he’s known for setting in cross country meets. Being more strategic about the front half of the race meant he had plenty in the tank for the home stretch this year, just like he did last year.
“I didn’t really need to kick as hard as I thought I would, so there’s still some in the tank,” said Parra.
