The Long Beach Poly softball team defeated Mira Costa on the road in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs on Thursday afternoon, 5-3.
The Jackrabbits (17-6) are the only remaining Moore League team in the playoffs after Millikan, Lakewood, and Wilson picked up opening-round defeats on Thursday. Poly will advance to the second round where they’ll host ML King on Tuesday at 3pm.
Thursday’s win came from opportunistic hitting at the top of the lineup as well as a solid outing from starting pitcher Nyla Springer, who pitched a complete game and allowed just four hits and three runs.
Poly got on the board first in the third inning with RBI hits from frosh standouts Kiele Ho-Ching and Emoni Lamsam, who made it 2-0. In the fifth the duo drove in another pair of runs, with Lamsam scoring on an error to make it 5-0 before the Mustangs eventually got on the board.
