The562’s high school softball coverage for the 2023 season is sponsored by Long Beach City Councilwoman Megan Kerr.
There are five Long Beach teams preparing for the CIF Southern Section softball playoffs after the brackets were released today. The first round is Thursday and all games are scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
In Division 2, Millikan (20-7) and St. Anthony (8-16) are on opposite sides of the bracket. The Rams are hosting Glendora, and the Saints are traveling to Ayala.
In Division 3, Lakewood (15-8-1) is traveling to El Toro and will likely face Norwalk in the second round if the Lancers win.
Long Beach Poly (15-6) and Wilson (13-15) are both on the road for the first round in Division 4. The Jackrabbits visit Mira Costa and Bruins travel to Schurr.
“Playing in a competitive league prepares us for Division 4 playoffs,” Poly coach Elizabeth Sanches-Martin said. “Now it’s time to focus, regroup and take the mistakes we made today into our practices for the next two weeks.”
Wilson has been playing much better as of late with quality wins over high division teams.
“We need to figure out everything we did in those games: good pitching and defense, timely hitting, smart base running and if we need to lay down a bunt we need to execute,” Wilson coach George Molina said. “That could be the difference between winning and losing these games.”
